Lanterns lighting up the night ...

... actually, they don't glow. Not at all. They are called Lantern Flies, basically because of the shape of their snouts. They are extra long and look amazing. I think that they are closely related to the cicada, but I could be wrong. This individual I saw in Chiang Mai, back in 2010. According to www.malaeng.com (a fantastic resource site for all bugs in Thailand), this species has variable forms. It really is a truly remarkable species.

Order: Hemiptera (Lantern Flies)
Family: Fulgoridae
Vernacular name: Dark-Horned Lanternfly
Scientific name: Pyrops spinolae (Westwood, 1842) - To be confirmed
